Leadership teams differ from other teams in some significant ways. First, they are composed of leaders/managers. Secondly, team members probably achieved their position by demonstrating technical excellence, by producing consistent results or by showing how they could build high performing teams, or perhaps more likely a mix of all three factors.

Increasingly, leadership teams are being asked to work together for the good of all, and sometimes this means that their own team needs to compromise.

What part does passion play in leadership?   I have often wondered what makes people successful. I have studied at length the elements of success. I wanted to know what made people or organizations the best. Being good is not enough. I wanted to know what it is that people and organizations possess that make them the leaders in their chosen endeavors.

I am not interested in getting to the top. I want to do things that make a difference. I don’t want it to be a one time thing or a sometimes thing. I want to make a difference all the time and want to be the best at making a difference. I learned a lot of things in my pursuit of being the best. Here are a few of the lessons I have learned.

During World War II, US forces took over islands in the Pacific where the residents had never see airplanes, or canned food, or any of the tons of material that a military force needs. The islanders were careful observers, though, and they figured out what the military did to cause the goods to show up.

This is what they saw. The military folks would go up into towers they'd built and talk into a box. Soon the material, or "cargo," would arrive.

When the war ended, the military went away and the cargo stopped coming. But some of the islanders figured that they could make the cargo come back. All they had to do was exactly what the US military people had done.
